Bob Marley’s grandson, Joseph Mercia Marley, has died at the age of 31.
Political figures in Jamaica paid tribute to the musician, whose father was the son of Bob Stephen Marley, after reports emerged that Joseph had died in Florida on Tuesday morning.
South Florida Radio station WZPP RADIO was among the first to report the news and claimed that Joseph was found unresponsive in the car. A representative for Joseph later confirmed the news to Rolling Stone.
However, the cause of death has not been confirmed.
Jamaica’s Minister for Culture, Gender, Leisure and Sport, The Honorable Olivia Grange, led the tribute to Joseph and tweeted: Bob Marley is dead.
We honored Joseph, whose stage name is Joe Mirsa, at the Jamaica 60 launch party in Miramar, Florida, USA in May.
My deepest condolences to Stephen, Joe’s mother, Kerry, Al Marley, and other family members. My heartfelt sympathies go out to Joseph’s friends and associates and to the reggae fraternity and fans everywhere.
She added, “His untimely passing at the young age of 31. o. is a great loss for music and we look forward to the next generation. May he find eternal peace as we mourn his loss during this season of goodwill when we celebrate with family and friends our love for one another.”
As Jamaican Opposition Leader Mark G. Golding said: “I have just learned of the tragic loss of Joseph “Joe Mersa” Marley. A talented young reggae artist, son of Stephen Marley and grandson of Bob Marley at only 31 years old. The loss of a child is a devastating blow that no one should have to face. From the parents, condolences to Stephen and the whole family.
Tidal, the streaming service partly owned by Jay Z, also tweeted: “Forever in our hearts.” RIP Joe Mercia Marley.
Joseph, who hails from music royalty as part of the Marley family, has been a musician in his own right after he released his debut EP, Comfortable, in 2014. The record features six songs, and featured guest appearances from reggae musicians Wayne Marshall and Jamiere Morgan.
His second album, Eternal, was released in 2021 and featured the likes of Busy Signal and Melii.
In addition to collaborating with his father Stephen, Joseph was featured on the Grammy Award-winning album Strictly Roots by Morgan Heritage.
The singer grew up in Jamaica, where he attended Saints Peter and Paul
Prep school, before moving to Florida where he was a student
Palmetto High School.
He studied studio engineering while at Miami-Dade College.
Joseph’s grandfather, a reggae-pop legend, died in 1981 at the age of 36 after a battle with cancer.
Bob is one of the most popular music figures and is known for songs like No Woman No Cry, One Love, Jamming, and Can You Be Loved.
Joseph is survived by a wife and a daughter.
