PSV Eindhoven announced that Liverpool will sign Cody Jaco, Manchester United’s target, next January.
Gakpo, who has scored three goals in five World Cup appearances for the Netherlands, almost joined Man United in the summer and has continued to be strongly linked with the Red Devils since then, but the Reds moved quickly to secure his services.
PSV said in a statement: “PSV and Liverpool have reached an agreement regarding the proposed transfer of Cody Jaco.
The 23-year-old striker will soon leave for England where he will undergo the necessary procedures before the transfer can be completed. Both clubs do not announce a transfer fee.
PSV completed negotiations on Boxing Day and granted Gakpo permission to travel to England.
The deal, which PSV says is a record transfer for them, will set Liverpool back £37m with a further £13m in add-ons, Fabricius Roman reports.
It is believed that Gakpo spoke to Virgil van Dijk when the official offer was made.
His movement strengthens Jurgen Klopp’s attacking options, with Luis Diaz excluded until March, while Diogo Jota is also injured.
Everton booed after Wolves lost but Lampard gave fans some home facts
Diaz will undergo knee surgery after suffering a setback in his rehabilitation from an injury sustained in October. Meanwhile, Jota was still plagued by a calf problem that sidelined him again in October.
“Liverpool need a player like him in the last year or two,” former Anfield midfielder Didi Hamann told talkSPORT.
“I don’t think they have enough goal threat from midfield. If you look at the players who have been there for the last few years – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, Thiago – they are all technically gifted but hardly score. Gakpo will take a little pressure from the front line “.
And Old Trafford was seen as a possible destination for Jakopo, who has scored 13 goals and 17 assists in all competitions for his club this season.
Premier League leaders Arsenal have also been linked with long-missed Gabriel Jesus with a knee injury, which he has since underwent surgery earlier in December.
PSV were hoping to keep his player until the summer but he showed up Resigned to lose it in the next window.
“If I had the choice, I’d prefer summer, but it can also be now, you know there will come a time when you can’t say ‘no’,” said PSV president Ruud van Nistelrooy.
“It’s great how he presented himself. I enjoyed watching him [at the World Cup]He deserves this because of his behavior, how he continued to work and perform.
“I was able to help him at such close range and it makes me proud. I’ll give him his way when he comes.”
