New on Netflix 2023: New movies premiering next year

If you thought 2022 was a big year for movies, wait to see what 2023 has in store for you.

In addition to the big theatrical releases – including Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, The Hunger Games prequel, and Christopher Nolan Oppenheimer – there’s a lot to get excited about on streaming devices.

Netflix’s got some amazing movies on its 2023 slate, including Maestro with Bradley Cooper in front of and behind the camera, the true story Bank of Dave, and Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget.

Here, we round up the 15 best new movies coming to Netflix in 2023.

1. Pale blue eyes

Throw: Christian Bale, Harry Melling, Gillian Anderson, Toby Jones, Harry Lottie, Robert Duvall, Lucy Boynton, Timothy Spall

The Pale Blue Eye follows a world-weary detective (Pale), who is assigned to discreetly investigate the gruesome murder of a student in 1830 in West Point, New York.

Hampered by the cadets’ rules of silence, he recruits one of their own to help solve the case – a young man known to the world as Edgar Allan Poe.

Directed by Scott Cooper, based on the novel of the same name by Louis Bayard.

2. Dave Bank


Throw: Phoebe Dynevor, Rory Kinnear, Joel Fry, Hugh Bonneville

Based on the real-life experiences of Dave Fishwick, Dave’s Bank tells the story of how a working-class man from Burnley and a self-made millionaire fought to create a community bank so that it could help local businesses in Burnley not only survive, but thrive.

In his bid to help his beloved community of Burnley, he must contend with the elite financial institutions of London and struggle to obtain the first new banking license to be issued in over 100 years.

The film is directed by Chris Vaughn, whose credits include Death in Heaven and Cold Feet.

3. Pamela, a love story

Pamela Anderson is ready to tell her story in a new documentary titled Pamela, a love story. In her own words, through personal videos and diaries, Pamela Anderson shares the story of her rise to fame, rock-solid romance and infamous sex tape scandal.

The film is directed by Ryan White (“The Keepers”) and produced by Jessica Hargrave, Julia Nottingham and Anderson’s eldest son Brandon Thomas Lee.

4. Your place or mine

Throw: Reese Witherspoon, Ashton Kutcher

Written and directed by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada, 27 Dresses), Your Place or Mine follows best friends and opposites, Debbie and Peter (Witherspoon and Kutcher).

5. Luther: The Fallen Sun

The plot of the Luther spin-off hasn’t been revealed yet, but we do know it was written by Neil Cross – who wrote all five seasons of the BBC drama series.

In a December 2022 interview with Entertainment WeeklyIt is revealed that the story follows the 2019 finale, where Luther (Elba) is arrested and sent to prison.

“He did so much to break the law in order to catch bad guys that he ended up in jail,” says Elba.

“This is where we begin the story. He is thinking about what he is going to do with his life.”

5. Mother

Throw: Jennifer Lopez, Joseph Fiennes, Lucy Baez, Omari Hardwicke, Paul Rasi, Gael Garcia Bernal

A female assassin emerges from her lair to protect her daughter, whom she abandoned years earlier, while on the run from dangerous men.

6. Ruin

Throw: Tom Hardy, Forest Whitaker, Timothy Olyphant

Written and directed by Gareth Evans (London gangs), Havoc is set after a failed drug deal.

A detective must work his way through the criminal underworld to rescue the son of a lonely politician, while untangling his city’s dark web of conspiracy and corruption.

7. The Monkey Man

Throw: Sharlto Copley, Subhita Dulipala, Dev Patel

Steeped in mythology but set in vibrant modern India, Monkey Man is Dev Patel’s directional debut – a revenge action film in the vein of John Wick and The Raid.

Full of humor and kinetic energy, our hero emerges from prison to confront a world mired in corporate greed and corroded spirituality.

Universal themes, vivid characters, and inspiring fight scenes make this a bombastic genre film for an international audience.

8. Chicken Run: blew up the block

9. Murder Mystery 2

Throw: Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston, Adeel Akhtar, John Kanye, Mark Strong, Melanie Laurent, Judy Turner-Smith, Kuho Verma, Enrique Arce, Tony Goldwyn, Annie Momolo, Zorin Villanueva

Few details have been revealed about Murder Mystery 2, but we do know that Sandler and Aniston are reprising their roles as Nick, a New York City cop, and Audrey, a hairdresser and murder-mystery novel enthusiast.

We also know that the sequel will feature “another international adventure full of intrigue and revelry” and filmed in action locations in Hawaii, the Caribbean, and Paris.

10. Electrolytes

Throw: Ashley Madekwe, Jordan Merry, Bukki Bakrai, Samuel Small

The life of an upper-middle-class mixed-race woman begins to unravel with the arrival of two mysterious figures in her town.

Filming took place in London, Suffolk and Berkshire between September and November 2021.

11. Heart of Stone

Throw: Gal Gadot, Jamie Dornan, Alia Bhatt

The plot of Heart of Stone is being kept under wraps, but it’s billed as a “spy thriller,” and Tom Harper (Wild Rose, The Aeronauts) is directing.

Gadot calls the film “very epic,” a “raw, supernatural thriller,” and says her character “lives on the adrenaline” of her adventures.

12. Extraction 2

Throw: Chris Hemsworth, Golshifti Farahani, Daniel Bernhardt, Tinatin Dalakishvili

Chris Hemsworth returns as Tyler Rake in Extraction 2, the sequel to Netflix’s blockbuster action movie Extraction.

After narrowly escaping the events of the first film, Rake returns as an Australian black ops mercenary, assigned another deadly mission: to rescue a ruthless Georgian gangster’s family from the prison in which they are being held.

Hemsworth reunites with director Sam Hargrave, with Joe and Anthony Russo producing and Joe Russo writing.

13. The kitchen

the kitchen The film is set in London, 2044, a future where the gap between rich and poor has been stretched to its limits.

All forms of social housing were eliminated and London’s working classes were forced to live in temporary housing on the outskirts of the city,

The Kitchen is the first and largest of its kind, and is the last village in London to house residents who refuse to move in and out of the place they call home.

Here we meet Izzy, a resident of the kitchen who is desperately trying to find a way out, and 12-year-old Benji, who has lost his mother and is looking for a family.

14. The Beautiful Game

Throw: Bill Nighy and Michelle Ward

Led by their coach Mal (Nighy), the film follows the England soccer team as they travel from London to Rome for the Homeless World Cup.

At the last minute they decide to bring in talented striker Vinnie (Ward), but he must face his own issues and promising past in order to help the team and move on with his own life.

It will be directed by Thea Sharrock, who previously presented Me Before You.

15. Maestro

Throw: Bradley Cooper, Carey Mulligan

Bradley Cooper transforms into esteemed Broadway composer Leonard Bernstein, with Mulligan playing Bernstein’s wife Felicia Montealegre.

Spanning a span of 30 years, Maestro follows the career of a West Side Story and The Waterfront conductor and composer, and his marriage to the Chilean-born actress.

Cooper wrote the screenplay alongside Spotlight producer Josh Singer. Cooper also directed – the first film he’s directed after 2018’s A Star Is Born.
