Richard Keys slams Pep Guardiola over Calvin Phillips’ weight gain announcement

Richard Keys slams Pep Guardiola for ‘ridiculing Calvin Phillips’ after revealing the Manchester City midfielder was ‘overweight’ but kept quiet when former striker Sergio Aguero was left out for the same reason.

Richard Keyes has accused Pep Guardiola of double standards after Manchester City boss Calvin Phillips was angered that his return from the World Cup was “overweight”.

The England midfielder was left out of City’s squad to face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Thursday night.

Phillips, who has played just 94 minutes of competitive football in an injury-plagued season, was told not to train with his teammates when City and Portugal players reported the return from Qatar.

Pep Guardiola was furious that midfielder Calvin Phillips had told Manchester City he was ‘overweight’ at the World Cup and went public.

beIN Sport presenter Richard Keyes has accused Guardiola of double standards for 'mocking' Phillips - saying he did not do the same with Sergio Aguero.

An angry Guardiola said: “He’s not injured – he just arrived overweight. I don’t know [why]. He did not arrive in good shape to do the training sessions and play.

However, the BeIN Sports Keys presenter has taken to Twitter to target Guardiola for his remarks.

A back-page publication from the Daily Mirror, which littered the story, wrote: ‘I wonder why Guardiola has subjected Phillips to ridicule for this ‘crime’.

‘Not a word when he was leaving.’ [Sergio] Aguero went out for the same offense. strange.’

Aguero, the now-retired former City striker, revealed in October that Guardiola once deemed him “too fat” to play after he flouted the manager’s strict weight restrictions.

Aguero said: If your ideal weight is 79-80 kg and you weigh 80 kg and 100 grams, you will be fined and not play.

‘But it can happen!’ I happen to have a little chicken for example, it will add 50 grams! “

Asked if he had been benched due to being overweight, Aguero added: “Well in the first season we were between fourth and third and he said ‘I left you because you got fat this week. ”

‘And what was I going to say?’ He was right… these things happen.

He said it well. And at that time I didn’t really trust him. But I’ve always been respectful of coaches.

However, Keys seemed to point out that Guardiola has not spoken publicly about Aguero being overweight.

Phillips wasn’t so lucky, with Guardiola making it public though, saying: “When he’s ready, he’ll play, because we need him, we need him a lot. It’s a private conversation with Calvin.”

The midfielder, who signed from Leeds for £42m over the summer, will now need to fight to prove himself against Guardiola.

City travel to Elland Road for their next game on Wednesday as they resume their Premier League title challenge.
