Souness attacks the “vulgar clown” Martinez, who “embarrassed himself and Argentina” in Qatar

Graeme Souness didn’t like what he saw from Emiliano Martinez during and after Argentina’s World Cup final victory over France.

Martinez was heavily criticized for making an obscene gesture with the Golden Glove trophy before Lionel Messi was awarded the Ballon d’Or.

It was a very strange moment that football fans won’t forget anytime soon.

Some liked what they saw of Martinez during the penalty shootout as he did his best to keep the French away.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper is famous for making a f**king save, especially when players are preparing to take a penalty kick.

Throwing the ball away from Aurelien Tchoameni just before he missed the target never fell well, and it stands to reason that this must be the case.

Souness is all for the little bit of the house, however, as he believes Martinez “crossed the line” against France and says the 30-year-old “embarrassed himself” and “embarrassed his country” by carrying the Golden Glove over his private parts.

This is the peak, Soness, who is not happy at all.

wrote to daily MailMuch of the controversy after the World Cup final centered on the behavior of the Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez during the penalty shootout.

“I can accept those antics, to a certain extent. But what we have to talk about more is the rude gesture he made after he was awarded the championship trophy.

“Do some people really find this kind of thing funny? Martinez embarrassed himself and his country. He looked like a vulgar buffoon. If that’s what he wants us to be remembered for, then God has us all.”

“I love him as a goalkeeper for Argentina and Aston Villa. But for him to think what he did was appropriate is discrediting the faith.

“Why would he not want people to remember him instead for his performance? Or the team’s performance? Or Lionel Messi’s performance?

“I can’t understand why he chose to do this in front of a world watching. He was also on stage with various dignitaries and the Emir of Qatar.

“What respect does he have for his hosts? For himself, even? Maybe he doesn’t care. He should. He won’t be so proud in years to come. Sadly, that image is part of the story of the final now.”

And what a final, by the way. The best of my life? Yes. Martinez played a huge part, not only in the penalty shootout but also in his save in the last minute of extra time from Randall Kolo Mwani.

But his behavior in trying to remove France players before their penalties were carried out clearly divided opinion.

“I was a part of this kind of thing before with my Liverpool teammate Bruce Grobbelaar in the 1984 European Cup Final against AS Roma in Rome.

Bruce famously used his legs of spaghetti to distract Francesco Graziani. He succeeded, hitting the crossbar. Alan Kennedy scored the last penalty and we achieved our third European Cup.

“Where Martínez crossed the line was by throwing the ball away from Aurelien Choamene, who hit the post. You still have to show respect to everyone else on the field. It’s not winning at any cost. There are limits to what you can do.”
