‘Stupid’ – Vieira insists Martinez mocks Mbappe for belittling World Cup trophies

Patrick Vieira says Emiliano Martinez’s mockery of Kylian Mbappe diminished Argentina’s World Cup championships.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper was one of the stars of his country’s national team, helping Argentina to a penalty shootout victory over France last week to claim Qatar’s biggest soccer prize.

The South Americans celebrated their accomplishments this week, as Martinez grabbed headlines for his brash antics on the road.

As well as calling for a ‘minute of silence for Mbappe’ in the changing room on Sunday, he was then seen holding a small doll with Kylian Mbappe’s face during an open bus parade, which prompted an official complaint from the French Federation.

France legend and Crystal Palace chairman Vieira believes his antics were unnecessary.

Speaking to the media, Vieira said: “When you talk about the abuse and the comments he received after the World Cup, I think it hurts the game and himself.

“Some of the pictures I’ve seen of the Argentina goalkeeper take a little bit of what Argentina achieved in the World Cup.

“I don’t think they really need that. Sometimes you can’t control people’s emotions or their decisions, but that was a stupid decision by Martinez to do that.”

Martinez’s boss at Aston Villa, Unai Emery, also said he planned to speak to the goalkeeper about his celebrations, but insisted his performance should be the main thing keeping Qatar away.

He said: “I want to speak to him when he comes here next week but I think more about his performance and his win than his celebration.

“I’d rather focus on how he’s doing and how he’s going to win with us next. I’ll talk to him because I want to be in control of him too – his feelings.

“We have to have values, we have to focus on the behavior when we are together and with the opposition players.

“We can speak in 90 percent of cases of very good things, and we are very proud of him, of his performance, of his victory. It is about more than small details like the celebrations.”
